Why are you here?

Why are you here?

Kind of unsettling when you really think about it - at least if you’re not exactly sure why, or how you should be showing up in the world.

I thought if you have kids this is easier, because you have to take care of your kids - that’s a good reason to be here, isn’t it?

But what about when the kids eventually grow up? Or the thing that you’re focused on goes away. What then?

So let’s give this a go and try and figure it out for you and me together.

Ok - I’ve cheated a little bit - I’ve already spend A LOT of time thinking about this… I’ve even thought about it to the point where I’ve brought myself to tears when I hit on the ‘right’ answer… that was years ago.

Here goes:

I’m here to experience a life different than what I was raised with - to blaze a trail and let my life serve as a guide for those coming with or after me on a similar journey.

To put it more simply… I’m here to do ‘not normal’ stuff and report back what happened.

Why ‘Not Normal’?

In some areas of life I love normal. I can eat the same food over and over again, but when it comes to the larger chapters of my life the idea of a ‘following the script’ just didn’t seem very interesting.

So I did things differently.

  • I rejected the idea of a ‘traditional’ career and strived to become an artist.
  • I left my home country at 21 to travel and discover myself and the world before the internet told you what to do and think.
  • I started a business, even though people told me it was crazy and yes, it ultimately failed.

Along the way I discovered self-development, self-help… or whatever you want to call it. The thing where you work on yourself. And where I’m at on this journey is that at some point you start asking yourself simple questions that have the power to shift your thinking.

After all those books, courses etc I can sum them up into one central idea:

If you can change how you think, you will become a different person.

And if you are completely happy with your life, and don’t want to leave the place you are at - perhaps questions like these aren’t the doors you want to be opening to see what’s on the other side. But assuming you are - let’s continue.

So why are you here?

  • What are you working towards?
  • Who are you becoming?
  • Who do you want to become?
  • Do you like the path you’re on right now?
  • Do you feel that you are ‘in flow’?
  • Is there anything that you’d like to change?

You can keep going on with these questions… I’m not sure exactly if they are helpful, but basically the idea is to get to the point where you can say for sure: Yes I want to change, or no I don’t want to change.

This is basically it.

Simple right?

So back to the original question… why are you here?

I’m here for myself, to live and express who I am in as pure a way as I am able.

This journey is mine, and it doesn’t need to make sense to anyone else - it’s just the adventure that I’m choosing to have, and share along the way.
